Succulents for cold climates

With a wide variety of succulent species available (at least 10,000), there are several varieties that are hardy enough to survive winter temperatures as cold as 10°F (12°C). Many other varieties can survive lower temperatures but only if they are kept dry or protected by insulating snow.

Here are some plant suggestions for cold climates:

Agave:

Agave americana
Agave ferox
Agave huachucensis*
Agave parryi*

Euphorbia:

Euphorbia pulvinata
Euphorbia clavarioides

Echinocereus:
Echinocereus pectinatus*

Ferocactus:
Ferocactus viridescens*
Ferocactus emoryi

Opuntia
Opuntia violacea variegated "Santa Rita"*
Opuntia ficus-indica

Octillo:
Fouuieria splendens*

Yucca:
Yucca rostrada*
Yucca whipplei*

* = cold hardy to 10 degrees Farenheit or 12 degrees Centigrade.
