Saguaro Care

Saguaro is the largest cactus in the United States and is seen scattered across the Sonoran Desert. These cacti can reach a height of 12 metres and an age of up to 200 years. Although saguaro has a quite limited geographical range, you can find these spectacular cacti in southern Arizona and extending into western Sonora (Mexico). Saguaros flower in spring, producing many buds near the tops of the stem and main branches.

In its natural habitat, the Saguaro can take 75 to 150 years to mature to an armed specimen. Water a saguaro with a slow trickle away from the base of the plant. Although it is not imperative, dig a shallow trench around the plant or use a soaker ring to deliver the water on all sides. The Saguaro's roots extend just under the surface of the soil in a circle about as wide as the cactus is tall. When rain falls or supplemental water is offered, the Saguaro quickly grows tiny rootlets to absorb all the moisture it can. In its natural habitat the Saguaro can take 75 to 150 years to mature. Water stored in the Saguaro allows it to greatly endure drought. Saguaro may bloom when it reaches 8 feet, but it is normally taller before blooms appear. Saguaros generally bloom in June, and the flowers are white, almost wax looking and only open in the evening and close in early morning hours. The flowers are pollinated by bats and birds, primarily doves. Once pollinated the fruit forms at the base of the flower. As it ripens, it turns red and is loaded with seeds.
