Caring for the Donkey's Tail

Among many succulents that grow as hanging plants, the "Donkey's Tail" makes an attractive plant with pendant stems that may reach 3 feet or longer. Native of Mexico, the "Donkey's Tail" has spindle-shaped leaves with a silver-blue cast to them. When mature to a hanging basket size, the "Donkey's Tail" blossoms with delicate pink flowers.

Care

Sedum morganianum needs warm temperatures and full sun to partial shade. Use well-drained soil mix consisting of equal parts of potting mix and sand with pumice added to increase drainage. During the growing season, typically from March to October, water about once a week. The soil should be allowed to dry thoroughly between waterings. Be careful of overwatering as this plant has small delicate roots that are prone to root rot. To help increase new growth, fertilize with a balanced solution that contains nitrogen, phosophorus, and potassium only once during the growing season. Stop feeding after August. During the dormancy period (November to March), water is only applied to keep the leaves from shriveling.

To prevent leaf drop or shriveling, keep the plant outside with bright conditions (not direct sun). Between December and March a temperature of 10 to 15°C is ideal In summer it can live in a South facing window and can tolerate higher temperatures The plant can be cut back once growth has stopped.
