Clay pots are ideal Ideally, clay pots are more appropriate for cacti than plastic because water can soak through the clay pots and evaporate, encouraging the soil to dry out quickly after watering. While clay pots may look more attractive, help stablize taller cacti, and help to mitigate the effects of over-watering, plastic pots hold more moisture, thus the obvious advantage is that you do not need to water as often. However, you need to be careful of overwatering the plant in plastic pots so it does not lead to rotting.

Top dressing A dressing of gravel or small stones on top of the soil will show off the plant at its best. Whatever pot you choose, use a pot one size larger than the previous pot because when you place your cactus into a much larger pot, you will encourage the plant to quickly expand its root system, at the expense of any growth on top. Cacti need pots that are porous such as, an unglazed terra cotta so the potting soil can dry quickly.
Ceramic pots as a decorative accent To be sure, you have other pot options like glazed or ceramic pots, which are just as attractive as terra cotta pots, but ceramic containers do not dry out as fast, and that may lead to root rot in cacti. If you use ceramic pots, water less frequently and use well-drained soil to help prevent rotting.
