Finding the perfect succulent and a container that will both complement each other can prove to be a difficult, yet rewarding task. You can create a beautiful display of sucuclents in any decorative pot as long as the pot has a good drainage and is proportionate to the size of the succulent. What kind of pot do I choose? Clay pots are better for cacti than plastic because water can soak through them and evaporate, encouraging the soil to dry out quickly after watering. Use a pot one size larger than the previous pot. By doing this crucial step, you will encourage the plant to quickly expand its root system, at the expense of any growth on top. A dressing of gravel or small stones on top of the soil will show off the plant at its best. Cacti need pots that are porous--unglazed terra-cotta is ideal--so the potting soil can dry quickly. Though ceramic or glazed pots don't dry out as fast, and that can lead to root rot in cacti, these containers are very attractive and can add a sense of color to any room in the house or outside on the patio. Ceramic pots are ideal for displaying collector (rare) plants as shown on left or enhancing the colors of such succulents as the greenish-pink rosette shape of Echeveria elegans shown on the right. Because most succulents are slow-growing, they can thrive and look beautiful in these decorative containers. |
